chapter vii - curse of the magician

[Zelda pleads for mercy]With Ganon dead and peace returned once again the the lands of Hyrule, Holodrum, and Labyrrna, Link had set off for foreign lands, his taste for adventure whetted. Hyrule was left in the protection of the Royal Family, whose King now controlled the complete Triforce. Because the King was pure of heart the Triforce obeyed his every command and his rule was one of benevolence. However, one day the King died suddenly and mysteriously. Thus, rule of Hyrule fell upon the shoulders of the incompetent Crown Prince, Zelda's brother.

The Brother was a horrible ruler, paying more attention to his needs than those of his people. Because the Prince was such a bad monarch, the Triforce would not allow him to possess the True Force, like his father did. That is, when the Prince tried to seize the Golden Power, he only received the Triforce of Courage, Zelda the Triforce of Wisdom, and the Triforce of Power disappeared. Furious, the Prince searched high and low across the land but to no avail.

Then one day, a mysterious sorcerer came to the Prince with an answer. According to the stranger, Princess Zelda knew where the missing Triforce was. Infuriated, the Prince and the Wizard paid Zelda a visit to demand where the Triforce was. Zelda claimed and pleaded that she had no idea, but to make her speak, the Prince threatened to have her put under a sleeping spell. As Zelda begged for mercy, the Wizard cast the spell- and then fell to the ground dead.

As if he had awoken from a dream, the Prince realized what just happened. He panicked, trying to wake Zelda desperately. Feeling defeated, he had Zelda played within the quiet halls of North Castle. To also ease his guilt, the Prince decreed that all first born girls in the Royal Family be named Zelda, and bequeathed the Triforce of Wisdom, in memoriam of his cursed sister. Furthermore, he hid the Triforce of Courage in an impregnable fortress within the Valley of Death which could only be opened by one pure of heart. Such a youth not being available at the time, he commanded Impa, Zelda's young handmaiden to wait until one presented himself. With Link long gone, that chance seemed farfetched.
