who is link looking for in majora's mask?

In the opening sequence of Majora's Mask, we see Link riding Epona in the Lost Woods. It is said that he is looking for a lost friend. The question is, who is that friend? In this theory I intend to show who I think it is.

The Idea(s)

  • Link is looking for Navi
  • Link is looking for Saria
  • Link is looking for Skullkid
Evidence
  • The ringing noise in the opening sequence
  • Ending sequence with Skullkid
  • Saria's assumed location
My Theory
After looking at the facts I'm going to make my decision on pure common sense, that Link is in fact looking for Navi. Of course, I can't write a theory on common sense alone, so let's take a look at the facts.

There have been alternative theories that Link is looking for Saria, who he loves, or Skullkid who he befriended in the woods. Link being in search of Saria lacks logic however, because it is once again Link's childhood, Saria would be where she was at that time- in Kokiri Village, not yet knowing she's a sage. Skullkid however, offers a more likely scenario because that would explain why Link is in the Lost Woods. However, this would assume that Link really cared about Skullkid, which makes no sense. Link only had contact with Skullkid twice: to get a Heart Piece for playing it Saria's Song, and for selling the Skull Mask to it. Also, Skullkid didn't even recognize Link at the end of Majora's Mask!

Therefore, the biggest possiblity lies with Navi. Navi did of course leave Link at the end of OoT, after traveling with Link across time. It is very likely that they developed a strong friendship, and Link might have even been traumatized by Navi's departure. The game also offers a subtle clue of making a "ringing" sound, Navi's trademark sound, during MM's opening sequence.

Conclusion- Link was looking for Navi at the beginning of Majora's Mask.

Your Theories

I believe even still the effect that the sage's still had to protect the temples was still inaffect even though time was restored in Oot. So making that Link might be searching for Saria, because he has no clue to where she is. If you guys remember hearing from some of the sage's in Oot, that had to guard the temples from evil, meaning that they have an internal duty to guard, yet I could be wrong, because they do all do have children in the future. And it comes to that link is loooking for Navi, even though, in the Zelda comics that reenact that adventure of link II fighting against Araghinm and Ganon, he comes across Navi, a century after link I. So he's looking for Navi in Magora's Mask, and later proceeds to find Navi and explores Hyrule, and meets the people he might of have been familiar.

Hi. Jason Boaz here, with evidence to support the theory that Link was looking for Navi in Majora's Mask. You see, during the ending of Ocarina of Time, Navi takes her leave, as if her mission was fulfilled, or something. He probably missed Navi so badly, he looked for her, during the time the Imprisoning War started. He got sidetracked by Majora, and who knows how long it'll take him to find it. Anyway, the evidence in OoT is conclusive. Link IS looking for Navi. I hope this clears everything up. Thank you.

Hes looking for Kaepora Gaebora because hes there and Kaepora Gaebora helped link (well kinda) in OOT. Then when he got in the skull kid mess and link had to save the the world again.

link wasn't really "looking for anyone" in the literal seance at all. he was trying to relive his youth, since he lost it all when he went to sleep for seven years. so the person link was trying to find, was himself. as to why he couldn't be looking for Navi, is because Navi would be in the future. Navi left in the future, so if link wanted to find Navi, he would have to do it in the future. one more thing, the little bell noise in the beginning was just a sound from one of the skullkid's fairies.

In regards to your question "Who is Link looking for in Majora's Mask," I believe it is none of the three possibilities suggested. I think it is Epona he was looking for.

In the opening sequence, Link was just riding through the forest; he didn't appear to have a specific goal or destination in mind. When the ocarina and his horse were stolen, then it became a quest to rescue his friend. His search didn't start until he entered Termina, is my belief.

He wouldn't be searching for Saria; why would he? She's back in Kokiri village, safe and sound. Navi's completely out of the picture, with her purpose done. And the Skull Kid: unlikely he was searching for that abomination, since the opening dialogue states he's looking for a beloved friend. The Skull Kid was nothing more than a passing acquaintance.
