the
hyrulian compendium is jabu jabu the windfish?
In Link's Awakening, the island of Kohilint is inhabited by a benevolent, giant fish named the Windfish. The Zora of Ocarina of Time worship a giant fish called Jabu Jabu. Both of these creatures bear an awfully similar resemblance. In this piece I seek to examine whether these two beings are in fact one in the same.
The Idea(s)
- Jabu Jabu is the Windfish
- Jabu Jabu is not the Windfish
Evidence
- They look alike
- They lack key similarities
- Nintendo's habit of character recycling
- Jabu Jabu/Windfish are both deities
My Theory
This is a fairly easy question to answer, so I'll stick to the facts. My theory is that Jabu Jabu is not the WIndfish, jsut another example of character recycling. How I think this is based on two things: Nintendo's character recycling and that they really don't look the same at all. For example, Jabu Jabu is more of a fish, and the Wind Fish looks almost exactly like a whale. Of course, they both are colored profusely, the coloring of the Windfish is its entire body and Jabu Jabu just wears a crown. Because (even though they look so similar) they are so different, this seems to be another example of Nintendo doing some bland character recycling. In my opinion, I don't even think Jabu Jabu was a god- just an incredibly fat fish that the Zoras worshipped. He demonstrated no real powers, and when Ganondorf froze Zora's Fountain, he just dissapeared- or died.
Conclusion- Jabu Jabu is not the Windfish, just a victim of Nintendo's character recycling.

It is stated on many webpages and I believe in "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" that Jabu Jabu always swims south in the winter. It is obvious that Kohilint Island is in the south, so it is easy to believe that Jabu Jabu has great power along with a low tolerance to cold. He probably just leaves Zora's Fountain everytime it becomes cold and seals himself in an egg and hibernates on the mountaintop of Kohilint Island. When Ganondorf Dragmire, The King of Evil freezes over Zora's Fountain, Jabu Jabu probably just went to Kohilint Island, and went into an extended period of hibernation due to the eternal freezing of Zora's Domain. After many decades, he just became known as a legend to the inhabitants of Kohilint Island, and was never seen until Link came along in Link's Awakening.
